Learn to play the ukulele from Jonathan Levy, president of the Buckeye Ukulele Society.
Program Description
Have you always wanted to play an instrument? No prior musical experience necessary! This 6 week Beginner Ukulele Program will start your musical journey through learning the fundamentals of the ukulele. You will learn basic chords, rhythms, and strum patterns that will enable you to play songs in no time! Bring your own SOPRANO, CONCERT, or TENOR size ukulele (with GCEA tuning) if you have one, or the library has some to loan as well. An electronic tuning device such as a Snark Tuner (or an iPhone/Android tuning app) is also recommended.
During this program, participants will learn the parts of the ukulele, how to tune the ukulele, basic chords, basic strum patterns, and some songs to play. As the learning continues, songs of increasing challenge and complexity will be covered. Time permitting, we might attempt some simple fingerpicking as well.
About the Instructor
Jon Levy first discovered the ukulele in 2018 while on vacation in Maui and immediately fell in love with this little four stringed instrument, which has literally changed his life. After spending several years taking lessons and workshops to learn the instrument, he – timidly at first, and now more confidently – started attending local ukulele and folk jams, and Ukulele Festivals in various states, and studying under ukulele masters such as Del Rey, Jim D’Ville, and Peter Luongo to further develop his skills with the instrument. Jon now makes it his mission to spread the joy of the ukulele wherever he can!
Jon currently serves as president of the Buckeye Ukulele Society, board member and Media and Publicity Chair for the Columbus Folk Music Society, and will be managing one of the performance stages at the 2024 Central Ohio Folk Festival.
Lessons begin Monday, February 19 at 6:30-7:30 PM and run through March 25.
